Pool Decks and Injuries You Need to Be Aware Of

Many of these deaths and injuries could have been possibly prevented with better safety awareness from the people who maintained the pool. One way you can safe guard your home or business from pool deck injuries, is to apply a non slip coating.

In New Jersey two 19 months old boys climbed over a gate near an in ground pool, fell into the pool
and drowned to death. A lawsuit resulted in over a 2 million dollar settlement.

According to The Law Firm of Saltz Mongeluzzi Barrett & Bendesky PC's website "the pool manufacturer has a duty to recommend and warn that pools should be protected by multiple levels of protection including parental supervision, adequate fencing, perimeter alarms, and safety covers. Evidence showed that thousands of children are treated in emergency rooms annually for immersion".

In Colorado 29 year old Robin Aleo, of Louisville, Colorado was at a pool party in Andover, Mass. She decided to slide head first down a slide sold by Toys R Us. The slide partially collapsed or deflated and she slammed her head on the concrete pool deck. Aleo died the next day. Toys R Us was ordered to pay Aleo's family $20.6 million.

During the trial, the lawyers representing the Aleo family said the slide didn't comply with federal safety standards. Toys R Us' attorneys argued that the Consumer Product Safety Commission regulation cited by Aleo's family only applies to rigid slides, not inflatable ones.

So what do these injuries and deaths tell us about pool decks?

According to Abbey's Hope, a charity designated to informing the public about the dangers of pool drains and inflatable pool slides,"approximately 3,600 non-fatal injuries occur to children 14 years old and under due to near-drowning incident . Home swimming pools and spas are the most common site for drowning."

Many of these deaths and injuries could have been possibly prevented with better safety awareness from the people who maintained the pool. One way you can easily safe guard your home or business from pool deck injuries, is to apply a non slip coating to the concrete pool deck area. If you can greatly reduce the risk of slip and fall injuries occurring outdoors in areas where hard concrete can cause severe injuries, its probably a good investment to make. Also regardless of whose fault the injury may be, if the injury happens on your premise, there seems to be a good chance that you can be found liable and may have quite the legal mess on your hands.

Is there a solution to Pool Deck Safety?

While there is no magical quick fix for pool deck related injuries, Bob Vila provides some important incite on pool deck safety below.

"Left untreated, a concrete pool deck is at the mercy of the elements and can be an accident waiting to happen. Exposure to sun, heat, rain, and cold will cause the surface to crack. Spilled beverages, suntan oils, and food can cause staining. A wet concrete surface is slippery, and lingering water can form into mold and mildew. The right sealer or protective coating will keep the surface looking new for years to come. It can also keep those running feet safely on the deck."
